New RENOINVEST Handbook Showcases Best Practices in Financing Sustainable Building Renovations

The RENOINVEST Consortium is proud to announce the publication of its newest resource: the Best Practice Handbook of Sustainable Building Renovations, a web-based compilation of innovative and replicable case studies from Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia. This digital publication highlights over 50 real-life examples of how smart financing models can successfully support energy-efficient building renovations in both the public and private sectors.

The handbook presents a diverse selection of financial approaches—from energy performance contracting and municipal subsidies to cooperative energy models and green loans. Each case is enriched with technical details, financial structures, outcomes, and SWOT analyses, offering practical insights for policymakers, investors, and municipalities alike.

The highlighted cases include:

  • A zero-carbon social housing refurbishment in Salzburg with heat recovery and tenant electricity models.

  • An ambitious geothermal pilot renovation in Vienna’s Zwölfergasse that taps energy from beneath the sidewalk.

  • Hungary’s multi-apartment retrofits using ESCO schemes and EU flat-rate funding mechanisms.

  • Slovenia’s pioneering community solar plant in Hrastnik and long-term EPC contracts in Kranj’s public buildings.

This handbook aims to facilitate cross-border learning, stimulate informed dialogue during national roundtables, and inspire the development of new financial instruments across Central Europe. It is part of Deliverable D2.2 of the RENOINVEST LIFE project, co-funded by the European Union.
